Robert Turner is one of the most important ceramic artists in the United States today.  Distinguishing himself in the the art pottery movement of the sixties, Turner rose to prominence when he moved from functional pieces to sculptural forms and began to create a body of work notable for its dynamic yet serene forms.  Both Marsha Miro and Tony Hepburn provide insightful commentary to accompany the many photographs of Turner’s work.

Sam and Alfreda met the Turners in 1963 when Sam, Frieda and Robert  were working with crafts people in El Salvadore for the State Department’s International Development Agency.  Later they would travel to the Southwest where Frieda introduced Robert to the pueblos and her potter friends.  Later Robert would credit these visits with impacting his work, with the soft natural shapes of the landscapes helping his transition from functional to art ceramics.  This is an excellent study of one of Sam’s favorite artist/craftsmen and a close family friend.
