Juan Quezado grew up in an impoverished former railroad town in Northern Chihuahua State of Mexico.  While tending the family goats he discovered old pottery chards from his forbearers.  He was drawn by the beauty of these partial pieces, showing a craft long since lost to his people.  This chance discovery became an obsession which led him to reinvent the lost pottery skills, and then nurture others in the craft.  The potters of Mata Ortiz are in a unique position.  Since they are separated from the traditional design rules of their ancestors, they are free to create both traditional and exciting new designs, born out of the inspiration of the earlier works they have uncovered.

The author, Walter Parks, has made many visits to Mata Ortiz, often taking groups on tours, including Sam and Beverly.  The Mata Ortiz pottery is highly valued by collectors and can be seen every fall at the Folk Art Weekend at the Maloof Foundation.
